Not so long ago, in order to survive, families had to get active together all day, everyday. Daily routines included many chores and getting around involved someone’s work out! Opportunities for cardio health and muscular tension and flexibility were part of life and exercise came naturally- literally!
In the year 2005, here in Canada, it is easy to live without exercise. The world is a very comfortable place with plenty to do while sitting still. Video Games, television. the Internet and a serious deprivation of spare time together in Canadian families, are all contributing to a routine of bad habits in our kids. Role Models Must Act Now!
Kids mimic everything their parents do. It’s important to send clear messages to our kids about what bodies need and how to keep our bodies in top shape. As well, kids should be aware of the dangers and how to protect themselves and ensure safety first.
If you do fit regular exercise into your routine, make them aware of that. It is important they understand you take care of your body and that your health is important to you. Talk about health concepts with your children often and lead them in their own energized play. If you play a sport- get them involved. Let them in on your action!
On the other hand, if, like many others, you have trouble finding the time to take care of your health, and time for workouts is simply not happening – change something tiny today! Now is the time to add a very manageable amount of activity together. Busy schedules and a wide availability of fast-food means our diet suffers as well as our activity level, so it becomes even more crucially important to motivate healthy lifestyles and energized play.
